Windsor Regional Recruits City, Leamington Hospital

The CEO at Windsor Regional Hospital says it's working with the City of Windsor's water department as it continues to deal with a sterilization problem that halted surgeries at one campus last week.

David Musyj, in an update sent to media and hospital staff, says the city will help examine a complete sterilization of its steam system.

The hospital put a full stop on surgeries at its Ouellette Campus after scorch marks were found on sheets used to wrap sterilized surgical tools. It's believed the problem is somewhere the 200 ft steam pipes that run from its boiler to the autoclaves.

Testing of the system continues and international experts are on site. Hospitals across North America that have experienced similar problems continue to reach out to Windsor Regional with their advice.

As of this week, most surgeries were transferred to the hospital's Met Campus. Musyj says the transition went smoother Wednesday than in the preceding days and gave credit to the staff who tackled issues as they arose.

Starting Friday, the hospital will also get support from Leamington District Memorial Hospital so it can rely less on SteriPro, the company from Toronto that was picking up instruments twice daily for sterilization.
