Kingsville's Smoking Bylaw Is Already Out Of Date

Kingsville's anti-smoking bylaw is barely 18 months old, but the deputy mayor fears it's already out of date.

Gord Queen plans to introduce a notice of motion at Monday night's council meeting asking administration to take another look at the bylaw. He thinks smoking requires a broader definition.

"Some of the other municipalities have a much wider definition that includes other products," says Queen. "Well, other things are being smoked now."

As more and more Canadians become accepting of marijuana use, he thinks it should include pot, and anything else that can be smoked.

"The way I understand it, if someone was smoking tobacco in our parks the health unit people could enforce it," he says meaning the current bylaw. "If they were smoking marijuana in our parks, I'm not sure the health unit people could enforce it."

Kingsville was the fourth municipality in Essex County to ban smoking in parks, community centres and arenas, on boat ramps and on beaches.
