Potential Changes On Horizon For Essex Elections

The Town of Essex is talking about how its Deputy Mayor should be elected in the future.

For the past number of years, the elected officials have simply sat around a table after the general election and chosen someone from council to fill the role.

Councillor Sherry Bondy thinks the position is too important to be selected this way.

"[The selection process] is very uncomfortable, and it's not democratic throughout our municipality," she explains. "The Deputy Mayor does not have to run in an election for Deputy Mayor."

A special meeting's being held tonight, where town councillors will discuss options such as adding an eighth council seat, realigning ward boundaries, or getting rid of wards all together.

Bondy expects that there will be further meetings and public consultation surrounding this topic, but says council needs to work quickly in order to draft a new bylaw by January of 2018.
