Brentwood Opts Out, Hopes Others Follow Suit

Now that Brentwood Recovery Home has opted out of a lawsuit against the City of Windsor and the Town of Tecumseh, its executive director hopes other charities do too.

Dan Souillere says the decision is their's to make, but his organization doesn't think the lawsuit is fair.

"We talk a lot here at Brentwood about gratitude and appreciation," he says. "We're grateful, we're appreciative of the community that supports us, and we're not about to go ask them to get on the hook here for even more money."

The legal action, which could cost taxpayers in Windsor and Tecumseh $70-million, alleges the municipalities charged charities too much for licenses to run fundraising bingos dating back to 1993.

At most, the city says it charged $165 per license and Souillere says he never thought that was too much.

"We have never, ever been of the view that they did charge too much. We never had a problem with license fees."

Back in January, Windsor and Tecumseh launched a campaign urging charities to back out of the lawsuit by the deadline, May 1. The campaign has been the subject of its own legal action.

Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation has also opted out.
