The minds behind the dragon boat races in Windsor-Essex are hoping to get more wigs to cancer patients in need.
Beth Noakes and Gerry Orum, local executives with Dragon Boats For The Cure, are working to set up a fundraiser in Lakeshore this summer with the express aim of raising money to help those who want a wig get one.
Noakes says a wig can be very uplifting to a cancer patient left without any hair after treatment.
"We want them to walk away with some normality and make them feel proud that they have this and that they can wear it comfortably," says Noakes. "Your hair will fall out. You'll lose your eyebrows. You'll lose your eyelashes and it's devastating."
Noakes remembers one cancer patient was thrilled to receive her wig.
"She lost it. She just go so emotional," says Noakes. "To sit in a chair and have your hair shaved off because it's falling out and you don't know what you're going to do. It's overwhelming for a woman."
Noakes says the support is needed as wigs can cost up to $1,500.
Organizers are hoping to see the event go August 6 at Lakeview Park. Town staff need to go over details of the event with the coordinators before council will get a chance to approve the event.
