Safety Concerns Spark Work Refusal At Sterling Fuels

Unifor Local 444, the Ministry of Labour and Sterling Fuels are working to resolve safety concerns at the company's Windsor dock.

Unifor Local 444 President Dino Chiodo says they had concerns about proper training and protective equipment. They refuel ships on the Detroit River.

"They're going to be offloading fuel by rail so in order to start that there has to be a number of procedures and components put in place," says Chiodo.

Saying it's not just a concern for the workers, but the community, Chiodo says the union took it seriously.

"Nobody wants a situation like [Lac] Megantic," he says.

The explosion in Lac Megantic, Quebec in July 2013 killed 47 people and destroyed 30 buildings when a runaway freight train carrying fuel derailed in the town's downtown.

Unifor Local 444 represents 17 full-time and a number of part-time workers at Sterling Fuels.

An employee at Sterling Fuels, who would not identify himself, says the matter is being resolved through the "proper channels" and refused to comment further.
