Public School Board Celebrating Black History

The Greater Essex County District School Board is releasing an updated version of its Roads to Freedom African-Canadian History document.

It's expected to include more details about local African-Canadians and their efforts to help abolish slavery.

Former Principal of H.D. Taylor Public School Jim Walls has been working in classrooms over the last few weeks, teaching kids traditional African-Canadian music while pretending to be slaves.

"I wanted them to feel and appreciate the dilemma -- the pain that these young people and their parents went through every day," says Walls. "Because the music that we ended up singing was born out of that."

Walls and a number of classes performed different songs and dances during a Black History Month celebration at West Gate this morning.
