Kingsville Gets To Work On Budget

Calling it an aggressive spending plan, Kingsville's mayor says town council has set aside three days for budget deliberations.

So far, the proposed 2016 budget calls for a 5% increase in the town's portion, but when that's added to the county and education rate, it's more like 2.5%.

"I know we can't support 0% in terms of the projects that are on the table," says Nelson Santos citing completion of some county active transportation trails and road reconstruction projects.

On January 26, the council will go over its list of capital projects.

"There will be some pre-approvals that administration will be looking for so we can get some tenders out early, try to get some best pricing for some of our big contract work."

Santos believes the council could cut the rate increase by removing some smaller capital projects.

Community groups can make their pitch for grant money on February 24. Council has also set aside March 30 for deliberations.
