New Homes Supported At Former School Site

A plan to build 32 new single-detached homes on the site of the former St.Maria Goretti Catholic Elementary School has the backing of a City of Windsor committee.

The Planning, Heritage and Economic Development Standing Committee recommend city council approve a rezoning change, completing the sale from the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board to Azar Holdings.

The school on Eastlawn Ave. between Edgar St. and Tranby Ave. closed in June 2014 as part of the board's accommodation review committee process.

"This provides for a very compatible redevelopment opportunity," says councillor Bill Marra, a member of the standing committee. "The lots are going to be approximately 40' in width and what we recommended for approval a zoning that is consistent with the look and character with the existing neighbourhood."

Marra doesn't know when the school will be torn down saying Azar Holdings and the school board will have to reach an agreement.
