The City of Windsor is moving forward with a $16.6-million streetlight conversion.
Over 22,000 streetlights will be changed to higher efficiency LED bulbs, saving the city $32-million over 15 years.
"Locally, we're the first to do a wholesale conversion but I think you're going to see others. It certainly is the way the industry is moving across North America because it is so efficient," says Shelby Askin Hager, city solicitor. "We anticipate seeing a lot of savings in terms of energy, in terms of maintenance and it also reduces our environmental impact and the night light pollution that you see."
The city is getting a $1.5-million grant to bring down the conversion cost.
Installation is expected to begin in the fall and to be completed around the end of June next year.
