Windsor's youth unemployment rate is surpassing the national average of 19.9%.
That's according to New Beginnings Executive Director Mary Kay Morand who says her organization is trying to reverse that trend. "There is a lack of job opportunities that qualified people, more qualified than our young people, are getting entry-level jobs, which then pushes out the youth," says Morand.
Morand says if this continues it could pose a problem.
"In years to come what we can foresee is that we're going to have a lot of unskilled people in our community," says Morand. "I think that's the biggest struggle is just being able to get a foot in the door and being able to have that experience to have something to put on their resumes."
The Youth Summer Employment initiative is giving 240 locals, ages 15 to 18, a seasonal job to gain experience for future opportunities.
