Pools of mosquito larvae are starting to be monitored as West Nile Virus season begins in Windsor and Essex County.
Of more than 400 pools tested last year, only one tested positive. But Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed says that was mostly due to below-average temperatures throughout most of the summer. "This year it is anticipated that it will be a warmer season, so we are hoping to get started on controlling (the mosquitos) so that we don't end up having more cases."
Pools that pose a threat to the public are sprayed by employees of GDG Environment, who use natural biochemicals to control mosquito populations.
In the meantime, Dr. Ahmed says the best protection against the disease is getting rid of standing water on your property and dressing appropriately when outdoors.
