Sink Holes A Major Concern

The City of Windsor's engineer wants the public to give the city a call as soon as they see a sinkhole open up.

The request comes after a construction worker was surprised by a sinkhole that opened under his feet Tuesday in Dieppe Park. He was working to restore a pump house at the time and wasn't injured.

Mark Winterton says the city has programs in place to predict and fix sink holes before they become a safety hazard, but "sometimes they sneak up on us."

He says several hundred sink holes are repaired across the city every year. "If you think about it, it's not really that surprising that infrastructure that's that old, that hasn't really been maintained in the last hundred years would fail at some point."

A sink hole usually starts small, and when notified, Winterton says workers repair it.
