Lakeshore Strengthens Outdoor Smoking Ban

Lakeshore is enhancing its outdoor smoking ban by allowing the Windsor-Essex Health Unit to also hand out tickets for bylaw offences.

Manager of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention with the health unit Kristy McBeth says tobacco enforcement officers will now be able to deal with provincial and municipal infractions in the town.

"The outdoor spaces that are included in the bylaw here in Lakeshore are also similar to what the province has covered," says McBeth. "Lakeshore has gone a little farther in terms of their protections, but they are spaces we are and will be actively enforcing."

McBeth calls Lakeshore a leader when it comes to tobacco enforcement.

"They really set the bar high and they've created a set of protections that are really the strongest in the area and as well some of the strongest in the province," says McBeth.

Lakeshore's ban on smoking and tobacco use covers parks, playgrounds, sports fields and recreation facilities in the town.
