Amherstburg To Consider Policing Options

When it comes to policing, Amherstburg wants to see what else is out there before renewing its commitment to the town's local service.

Mayor Aldo DiCarlo says he heard repeatedly from people during his campaign wondering if the current policing model is the best option. He says there are two other possibilities: having the Ontario Provincial Police take over and setting up a regional police force.

DiCarlo says it'll likely be a hot topic at two upcoming public meetings. The town hasn't set a date for those yet.

"In the end, municipal policing might still be the best alternative," he says. "Up until now, the residents just haven't seen any options."

In 2014, Amherstburg budgeted more than $5.5-million on its police service. There is no costing available for OPP policing since there's a moratorium on expanding their services until it can fully implement its new pricing model.

Leamington originally paid $6-million a year for OPP policing, but is expected to save approximately $1.5-million under the new pricing model.
