With the threat of closure facing Amherstburg's only high school, town council now stands firmly behind keeping its doors open. Councillor Diane Pouget asked for council's support on formally taking a stand, letting the public board know General Amherst High School needs to remain open. Pouget was also the chair of the school's parent-teacher association when a similar situation happened in the 1990s. "I don't want our community to have to go through what we went through in the 1990s when they actually took the school away from us and we had to fight so hard to get it back," says Pouget. "It pitted family members against family members and I want to make sure that doesn't happen again." Pouget says council in the 90s chose to stay silent and not show support for General Amherst. If it closes, Pouget says it will tear the community apart. "I think it's absolutely ludicrous to even consider it," says Pouget. "People, when they move into the community, that's the first thing they want to check out is our schools. If we don't have a high school, we really don't have anything because our students are our future." The school board is currently seeking members for a committee to review the school that will have its first meeting on January 21.
