Water Conservation High Priority

Windsor could become the poster-city for water conservation in Ontario.

The Windsor Utilities Commission is currently running a pilot project for the provincial government.

General Manager John Wladarski says officials have been paying visits to residences across the city to talk about how they can save more water. "There will be a follow-up exercise to determine how effective these conservation initiatives have been and will be. And then that will drive us through to determine whether we need to or should continue with the same programs on a permanent basis."

Wladarski adds that the less water pumping through the local treatment system, the more money consumers save, and more energy the utilities save as well.

About 300 homes are part of the project, which started in September and wraps up at the end of December.
