Mike Weir impressive in first Champions Tour event

Mike Weir began his second golfing career as a member of the PGA's Champions Tour with an impressive six under par finish and a tie for 27 at the Ally Challenge.

The Sarnia native opened the tournament with an opening round two under 70 on Friday at the Warwick Hills Golf Club in Grand Blanc, Michigan, the former site of the PGA's Buick Open.

That was followed by rounds of 69 and 71.

Weir turned 50 on May 12 and shares his birthday with Jim Furyk who won the tournament in his first Champions Tour event at 14 under par.

Weir is the only Canadian to win a PGA Tour major, capturing the 2003 Masters, and has eight victories overall.
