Spooktacular events being held in Petrolia

Those looking to get into the Halloween spirit are in luck.

The Petrolia and Area Kiwanis Club will once again host Fiery Faces events to get you into the spooky season.

"We are having a community carving night in which we invite people to come out and carve pumpkins. And then for the next three nights, we have lightings where people can come out and add to them if they'd like to, but also come and see the pumpkins. We carved 650 pumpkins last year, and I'm hoping to one day reach 1000 just to put on a great show," said Petrolia Kiwanis member Cheryl Veary.

There will also be a haunted house each night of the event as well as food and warm drinks.

"The haunted house is optional, and we also have a little family fun fest day, which takes place on Saturday from three to six. There'll be activities for the kids, such as crafts and games and pumpkin carving, and we're also offering a toned-down haunted house so the kids can walk through and enjoy it if they don't want the full run of it."

Admission is free, although donations to the Kiwanis Club are welcome. Sponsors and volunteers make the event possible.

"One way we raise money is that people pay to get their logo carved on a pumpkin. So I carve all those pumpkins, and we display them for the three nights," said Veary.

All the pumpkins and their guts are composted or repurposed by being fed to local animals.

"Luckily we're out at Discovery, and we end up throwing them in the bushes. There's lots of deer that roam around, and this year we're having a farmer who's going to come and pick up the pumpkins and is going to be able to use them for feed."

The event kicks off at Petrolia Discovery with the Community Carving Night on Thursday, October 22 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Public pumpkin viewing runs Friday, October 23 through Sunday, October 25, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. nightly, with the Family Fun Fest taking place on Saturday, October 24, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
