Innovative $12M 'Small House' addition at Lambton Villa nearing completion

A first-of-its kind model for long-term care in Ontario is one step closer to reality as Petrolia's $12 million Small House Addition enters its final stage.

In a report to Lambton County Council Committee of the Whole, staff said this marks an important milestone in the transformation of long-term care at Lambton Meadowview Villa.

The report said work is now centered on interior finishes such as millwork, painting, and flooring alongside the completion of essential utility services. Key facility tech and security systems are also actively being installed, including IT infrastructure, call bells, CCTV, and door access controls.

Over the coming months, staff said efforts will focus on wrapping up construction, commissioning building systems, and completing landscaping and parking areas.

"The Small House model represents an innovative approach to long-term care, designed to create a more home-like, person-centered environment for Elders," read the update from the Long-Term Care (LTC) Division. "The addition will support enhanced quality of life through smaller living spaces, consistent staffing, and a focus on individualized care."

The Small House, the first of its kind in Ontario, will house 12 people, each with their own private room and three-piece washroom, a central shared living room, dining room and kitchen, connected to an outdoor space.

The project remains on track for its targeted completion and occupancy in January 2027, with staff closely monitoring progress alongside contractors to keep the timeline on schedule.

Funding for the project was largely covered by LTC Reserves, but a public fundraiser was launched in the spring to help offset some of the cost.
