With winter just around the corner, the City of Sarnia is looking for volunteers to assist with its Adopt-a-Driveway program.
They'll help clear snow for elderly and disabled residents who might face challenges doing it by themselves, and who can't afford a third party service.
Communications Manager Steve Henschel said the volunteers will be needed within 24 hours whenever more than three inches of snow accumulate.
He said the service is offered from December through April.
"From the individuals that participate, they always say it's very heartwarming," said Henschel. "It's a great way for them to just involved in the community. We know some workplaces and workplace groups kind of do it as a team building exercise. For the high school students out there, it's a great way to get your volunteer hours in."
Henschel said the homeowners are always very grateful for the assistance, adding they have a waitlist of about 20 people needing help.
"We'll supply the shovels, the safety vests, the salt and all of that stuff," he said. "Volunteers are required to attend a bit of a safety orientation. It's all done online, and it doesn't take a lot of time."
Those under the age of 18 will require a parent/guardian signature with their application.
Henschel said anyone interested in volunteering will also have to complete a vulnerable sector check with Sarnia police, which will be reimbursed by the city.
