Imperial to cut workforce by 20%

Job cuts are planned at Imperial.

The Calgary based company announced Monday plans to reduce its workforce by about 20 per cent by the end of 2027.

In a news release posted to its website, Imperial said the expected annual savings will be $150 million by 2028.

The release went on to say Imperial will further consolidate activities at its operating sites, enhancing collaboration, operational focus and execution excellence.

The majority of the job cuts will be felt in Calgary according to an email to Sarnia News Today by Imperial.

“We recognize the considerable impact this restructuring will have on our employees and their families. We are deeply committed to supporting our employees through this transition,” said Imperial's Chairman President and CEO John Whelan in the news release.

Imperial said during the transition period, the company's focus will remain on safety and operational excellence.

A request for details about how the cuts would impact operations in Sarnia were forwarded to the head office in Calgary, which responded with the initial news release.

At this time, it's unclear how many jobs will be impacted locally.
