Extended closures at Aamjiwnaang because of high benzene levels

Elevated benzene levels detected at Aamjiwnaang First Nation have resulted in the extended closure of several facilities.

Higher than normal levels were recorded Tuesday morning at the AFN Sportscentre monitor.

As a result, buildings in that area, including the First Nation band office, environment building, public works, child and family services, education administration building, blue building and the church were closed for the day and Wednesday.

An alert Wednesday morning through the Aamjiwnaang Notification System said elevated levels were detected again, so affected buildings will remain closed again on Thursday.

Staff are being advised to work from home.
