Local shortstop selected by Yankees in MLB draft

A shortstop from Plympton-Wyoming is one step closer to his dream of becoming a Major League Baseball (MLB) player.

Core Jackson was selected in the fifth round, 164th overall, by the New York Yankees in the 2025 MLB draft.

The 21-year-old Lambton Central Collegiate and Vocational Institute (LCCVI) graduate just completed his senior season with the University of Utah Utes.

He batted .364 with 12 home runs, 19 doubles, 44 RBI and 20 stolen bases and was named a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, which is given annually to the best college shortstop.

Jackson made the PAC-12 All-Conference Team as a junior and the All-Big 12 First Team as a senior.

He played for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as a freshman in 2022 and spent the 2023 season at South Mountain Community College.

Jackson suited up for the Canadian National Junior Team in 2020, and has also been a member of the Sarnia Brigade.
