Michigan agents apprehend illegal border crosser

An 18-year-old Iranian citizen was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol agents on Sunday after illegally crossing the St. Clair River into Michigan.

While on patrol, Marysville agents were called about a person carrying a paddle board near East China Township, across from St. Clair Township.

The accused, who is a legal Canadian resident, was arrested and sent back to Canada.

Chief Patrol Agent John Morris of the U.S. Border Patrol’s Detroit Sector said incidents like this underscore the vital role the public plays in border security.

"We rely on and value the vigilance and cooperation of our communities to identify and report suspicious activity, and their involvement remains essential to our mission," he said.

There's no word on whether charges were laid.

Members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious activity near the border by calling the Border Patrol’s 24/7 tip line at 1-800-537-3220.
