Mayor withdraws motion to take down American flags

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley has withdrawn his motion to remove American flags from municipal buildings.

In a letter to city council, the mayor stated the move followed Friday's announcement from Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump after a phone call between the two leaders.

"The leaders agree to begin comprehensive negotiations about a new economic and security relationship immediately following the election," said Bradley in the letter. "In light of this announcement, I will be withdrawing the motion to remove the U.S. flag on Sarnia City properties pending the outcome of those talks as a sign of goodwill."

Bradley's motion was originally to be introduced during Monday's meeting in response to the ongoing trade war and continued threats of annexation.

He said in his letter that the Canadian Border Mayor's Alliance, of which he is a member, has stated that our cities and countries need policies that encourage investment and facilitate the efficient movement of goods and services across the border to sustain economic prosperity and job creation.

"We urge national leaders to put our communities first, end the trade water, and keep our countries strong with free and fair trade, said Bradley. "Our families, business, and workers depend on it."
