Pysanky featured in pop-up exhibition

A pop-up exhibition at the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery in Sarnia is showcasing the ancient Ukrainian art of egg decorating, known as pysanky.

The unique exhibition opened on March 26 and features over 50 pysanky.

The eggs on display were decorated using a wax-resistance method.

"The word pysanky derives from the Ukrainian verb pysaty, meaning 'to write,' highlighting the method of drawing intricate designs on the surface of a raw egg," read a media release from the County of Lambton.

The four local artists who put their own spin on this art form include Christina Cuckovic, Janice Cuckovic, Mary Kilbreath, and Terenia Samanica.

Community members can meet the artists during the last day of the exhibition on April 26 at 1 p.m. to ask any questions.

The gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., with extended hours on Thursdays until 8:30 p.m.
