Point Edward firefighter remembered

Friday marks 15 years since a local volunteer firefighter drowned during an ice rescue training exercise.

Point Edward firefighter Gary Kendall, 51, died while taking part in training exercises on the St. Clair River on January 31, 2010.

The subsequent investigation found that while there was rescue equipment in one of the fire trucks parked on shore during the exercise, there was no equipment readily available to pull Kendall ashore.

An inquest in 2017 ruled the death was an accident.

The inquest jury made a total of 15 recommendations, including the creation of an approved training curriculum.

The flag at the Point Edward Fire Station on Michigan Avenue is flying at half-mast in remembrance of Kendall.
