Large crowd gathers in Sarnia to remember

Hundreds of Sarnia residents, with poppies proudly pinned to their chests, stood in silence during the annual Remembrance Day service at Veterans Park.

The colour party left the Royal Canadian Legion on Front St. at 10:30 a.m. for the downtown procession to the park.

Deacon David Cummings delivered the November 11 address to the large crowd.

"At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, time stands still for a moment and we remember those who died not for war, but for a world that would be free and at peace," said Cummings.

Government officials, various organizations and agencies and individuals laid over 100 wreaths at the foot of the war memorial in Veterans Park.

The first wreath was placed by Memorial (Silver) Cross Mother Pat Poland, whose son Brent was killed in Afghanistan in 2007.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, 10 years since the end of the Canadian peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan, and the Royal Canadian Air Force centennial.

Premier Doug Ford issued a statement for Remembrance Day.

“On this day of remembrance, I ask everyone in Ontario to join me in paying tribute to the Canadian heroes whose bravery and sacrifice are the foundation of our country’s freedom," said Ford. "During our shared moment of silence, let us honour the brave women and men who serve and have served in our Canadian Armed Forces and remember those who gave their lives to keep us safe."
