Two local students have been awarded the Chitovas Lawton Foundation Scholarship and grant to help further their skills in media and performing arts.

Theatre Sarnia and Imperial Theatre recently announced Karissa Kern as the recipient of this year’s scholarship.

She has been involved with Imperial Theatre since she was just seven years old, and has participated in more than 10 productions with Theatre Sarnia.

"[Kern] has grown tremendously over the years, both as a performer and as an individual," said Imperial Theatre and Theatre Sarnia Executive Director Brian Austin. "Her passion for musical theatre and her dedication to improving her skills are truly inspiring. We are incredibly proud of her accomplishments and are honored to support her as she takes this next step in her journey."

Kern was accepted into Sheridan College's prestigious

musical theatre program.

Meanwhile, Ayla Cotes was awarded the $2,000 Chitovas Lawton Foundation grant.

Theatre Sarnia said her focus on creating positive media and mentoring young peers made her stand out during the selection process.

"[Cotes'] passion for the arts and her thoughtful interview answers showed a clear vision for her future," said Austin Jr. “We believe that supporting [Cotes] will not only benefit her but also enrich our community through her future creative contributions."

Cotes plans to study media production at Toronto Metropolitan University.
