Man wanted for ongoing scam arrested after two failed attempts

A 65-year-old man wanted for an ongoing scam in Sarnia has been arrested after two failed attempts.

The Sarnia Police Service (SPS) said Bernd Adamek was finally taken into custody Friday.

He was wanted for approaching strangers and using emotional and high-pressure tactics to receive money.

Police said officers first tried to stop Adamek's vehicle on Finch Drive, north of Wellington Street, just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. 

It's alleged he refused to stop and accelerated to speeds above 120 kilometres per hour before officers called off their pursuit over safety concerns.

A second attempt to stop Adamek's vehicle was made Thursday, at 10 p.m., on Indian Road south of Talfourd Street.

Upon seeing cruiser lights, police allege Adamek accelerated again, but this time blew through a stop sign with no regard for the safety of other vehicles or pedestrians.

Officers called off that pursuit as well because of safety concerns.

Sarnia police said Adamek is being held for bail and is charged with five counts of fraud under $5,000, 12 counts of failure to comply with a probation order, two counts of flight from police and two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
