UPDATE: Sarnia police arrest assault suspect

Sarnia police have arrested a 16-year-old suspect in connection to an unprovoked assault on Talfourd Street.

A 66-year-old man was on his way to the Sarnia Library when the incident happened on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Police said the victim was walking westbound on Talfourd Street near Queen Street with his headphones in when the suspect suddenly ran up and struck him multiple times in the head.

Investigators canvassed the area and located security footage capturing the assault. The footage was released to the public resulting in tips helping to identify the person.

On Tuesday, officers executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence and located the teen inside.

Police said the youth allegedly attempted to flee and fought with police, striking one officer in the mouth before being taken into custody.

He's charged with assault, assaulting a police officer, and resisting arrest.

According to police, the youth was also identified as a suspect in a break-and-enter at a Cathcart Boulevard home last month and is facing additional charges.
