The Sarnia Sting (22-27-3-1) suffered a 4-3 shootout loss to the Firebirds (22-25-3-1) in Flint Wednesday, in game one of a home and home series between the two hockey clubs.
The Sting opened the scoring with two quick goals by Zach Filak and Carson Hall in the first ten minutes of the contest, followed by a goal from Dallas Stars prospect Tristan Bertucci for Flint, cutting Sarnia's lead to 2-1 heading into the second period.
Flint's Nolan Dann would tie it up at 2-2 with a goal in the second period against his former team.
The Sting's Dylan Moses made it 3-2 with a goal late in the second period, but Marko Stojkov would tie it up again at 3-3 in the third.
Following a scoreless overtime, the game transitioned to a shootout to decide the winner.
Sting goalie Nick Surzycia stopped 25 of 28 shots and Edmonton Oilers prospect Nathan Day made 25 saves in net for Flint.
Nolan Dann scored the winning goal.
The victory moves the Firebirds into eighth place in the OHL Western Conference, tied with Sarnia at 48 points.
Sarnia is home to Flint on Friday at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.
