Shipping delays have pushed back the opening date of Sarnia's new Clearwater Library, however, the setback has not affected the project's budget.
The new 4,000-square-foot library is located above Clearwater Arena on Wellington Street. The surrounding area will also be the site of a new Sarnia Transit terminal, also expected to open this year.
It was previously hoped the library would have opened in mid-January, but City of Sarnia Facilities Manager Tom Burnard said the site is now expected to open in April.
"Unfortunately, we are continuing to experience that impact of the supply chain issues that began throughout the pandemic," he said. "We're not alone, it is an industry-wide issue. So, unfortunately, in this case, we did experience some delays with some custom material that was required for the project."
Burnard said one custom piece includes the fire and shatter-proof glass which will overlook the arena.
The site features an open concept overlooking the "blue rink" and includes a community room and accessible washrooms.
Aside from shipping delays, no other challenges or issues were noted during the renovation process.
Despite the delay, Burnard said the project is on budget, within the approved $1.05 million allotment.
Meanwhile, Bernard said they're currently working on finishing touches for the space, such as bathroom finishes, wayward signage, and the installation of security cameras.
"The city is excited to be working with our partners at Lambton County to deliver a new library branch," said Bernard. "It coincides with the city currently undertaking a Master Plan for the arena, along with surrounding lands, and will ultimately have a goal of creating that community hub feel, which will serve a wide range of recreation and leisure needs now and into the future. It's a very exciting project for us."
Although a specific opening date has not been set, Burnard said a grand opening celebration will be held to mark the occasion.
