The Brigden United Church is looking to give back to those in need with the launch of its Little Caring Cupboard.
It has been set up near the back door of the church on Jane Street in Brigden and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Organizer Barb Steadman said it first started off as a cooler but has now been upgraded to a cabinet with non-perishable food items, and is accessible to everyone.
"When people find themselves needing something between pay cheques maybe or between grocery shops," she said. "There's quite a variety of things in the cupboard so, they can get something to make a meal."
Steadman told Sarnia News Today that it is off to a slow start in terms of people using it.
"We're going to be patient and see if there is a need then we'll fill that need," she said.
Members of the public have been donating food to help those who need to use the cupboard, according to Steadman.
"The public school had a big collection right before Christmas and so they shared some of their donations with us and the other church in town shared some of their donations and just in general we have a nice stock," she said.
When the idea first came up it was unclear if there was a local need according to Steadman, but she said they thought they would give back with the price of food now at the grocery store.
"Please don't be afraid to use it, it's there for anybody that needs it or finds themselves in that position where they could use it," Steadman said.
Anyone wishing to donate to the caring cupboard can do so on Thursdays at the church at 2420 Jane Street in Brigden.
