Point Edward Fire frustrated by repeated vandalism of life rings

Officials with Point Edward Fire and Rescue say one of the life rings mounted at the Blue Water Bridge's base has been vandalized again in a "senseless act."

The fire department recently posted details about the incident on Facebook. According to the post, the vandalism occurred between the evening hours of July 4 and the morning of July 5.

"The cover for the housing and the life ring itself were slashed with a sharp object," read the Facebook post.

The incident prompted a reminder to the public that the life rings are lifesaving devices, meant to be used if a person is having difficulty in the St. Clair River.

"Unfortunately, this is not the first time these life rings have been vandalized and PEFD is becoming increasingly frustrated at the disregard for the lives of others, as well as the cost to repeatedly repair the life rings," read the Facebook post.

A life ring cabinet was vandalized in the summer of 2021. At that time, the life rings costed about $1,000.

Lambton OPP is investigating, however, they haven't released any information about the incident.
