New community safety zone signs posted

Signs are up in a north end area of Sarnia, deemed a community safety zone.

Indian Road north of the Highway 402 overpass to Lakeshore Road, and Lakeshore Road between Regency Street and Mills Street was recently labelled a safety zone by city and county council.

Cst. John Sottosanti said fines for speeding have also gone up.

"If you are caught speeding in the area the fines will be doubled," said Sottosanti. "That is something that hopefully people will take into account. I'm sure that most people do drive the speed limit, but for those who choose not to, the fine will be heftier."

The recommendation to make the area a community safety zone was based on the presence of nearby schools and pedestrian traffic.

"The city has targeted this area as a community safety zone," he said. "Obviously there's been public request to make it into a safety zone for the safety of the students and pedestrians in the area. Also, for the residents of the area who probably have witnessed a number of people moving up and down that street at a very high speed."

There are a total of nine community safety zones in the city.
