The summer of 2022 is off to a hot start.
A heat warning remains in effect for Sarnia-Lambton. The summer solstice officially arrived at 4:14 a.m. Tuesday.
The forecast for the arrival of summer Tuesday calls for sunny skies and a high of 35 C, 95 F, and a humidex of 40 C, 104 F. The normal daytime high for this time of year in Sarnia-Lambton is around 26 C, 79 F.
Environment Canada Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Geoff Coulson said this summer is expected to be somewhat warmer than normal.
"It does look like things are shaping up to be, not necessarily going to mean a lot more heat events, but certainly the possibility is going to be there to see more of these summer days get up into the low thirties for those daytime highs," said Coulson. "And the equally important factor in these heat events, not seeing that overnight temperature dip down all that much."
Coulson said precipitation over the summer months is expected to be lower, however that can be difficult to predict since it's also thunderstorm season.
"Not just for Sarnia-Lambton, but for pretty much right across southwestern Ontario, is for conditions overall to be somewhat dryer than normal," he said. "On those days where there is going to be a lot of heat, humidity and instability, there will be a good chance of showers and thunderstorms and heavy downpours. But, those heavy downpours could be fairly localized and could be fairly brief."
The first day of summer is the longest day and shortest night of the calendar year. The sun will rise at 5:50 a.m. and set at 9:12 p.m.
