Some much-needed accessibility upgrades are in the works at the historic Victoria Playhouse in Petrolia (VPP).
A $35,000 grant from the Judith and Norman Alix Foundation will allow the town to develop a plan to make the building more accommodating for those with disabilities.
Petrolia Director of Marketing, Arts and Communications Laurissa Ellsworth said they're looking to install a passenger elevator to the balcony level.
"That is definitely the number one concern for our patrons, is the ability to access the balcony without an elevator," said Ellsworth. "Believe it or not, that is the only place in our auditorium where we generally have seating that is not full because people just can't get there."
Other possible upgrades include the addition of accessible washrooms, and a freight elevator at the back of the building for the stage area.
Ellsworth said the projects could cost between $2 million and $3 million and plans for a capital campaign will be announced shortly.
"We feel so honoured that the Judith and Norman Alix Foundation believes in our project, and is willing to put support into the arts."
Once the plan is finalized, it will go to Petrolia council for review and there will be a chance for the public to give their input.
Victoria Hall is home to the VPP and is also used by a variety of community organizations for meetings, celebrations, and fundraisers.
VPP welcomes approximately 40,000 patrons annually to their summer season and Christmas productions and inject more than $2 million dollars locally each year in economic spinoff.
