Construction of Sarnia Christian school a family undertaking

The addition at Sarnia Christian School has really taken shape over the past few months.

Principal Len Smit said the building has been closed-in and is heated now.

"The delay that we had was getting the glass in for the windows and most of that has now arrived," said Smit. "There's still some plywood covering some of the openings, but other than the glass, everything is on time for a September start."

Smit said crews are working hard on the school's new kindergarten rooms and common eating area.

"The wiring is done. They are now doing some drywall and will be ready for mudding, and I guess painting would be the next thing for the interior. Work on the exterior will have to wait until it warms up."

Smit said some of the workers, from Fred Van Reenen Construction, are very familiar faces.

"The company doing the construction, it's three generations of Sarnia Christian School alumni that are building it. So, we've got the grandparents, the parents, and now the grandkids are part of the company. So, it's three generations of Van Reenens."

Smit said the students even celebrate with them.

"One of the grandparents is the guy doing the construction and on his birthday the kids all sang happy birthday to him," he said.

Smit said the Van Reenen's great grandfather built the original school back in the 1950's.

Construction of the addition was originally planned to start in 2019, but the foundation at the Exmouth Street and Pontiac Drive site wasn't was poured until September, 2021.

A $1.5 million renovation was completed on the north end of the building in 2016.
