Sting remain COVID-free after concerns surface around the OHL

Concerns surrounding COVID-19 have resurfaced in the Ontario Hockey League this week.

The Erie Otters have been forced to postpone their games this weekend after 13 players tested positive for the virus.

The Sarnia Sting were in Erie on Sunday. Despite that, General Manager Dylan Seca said the entire team has tested negative for the virus as of Wednesday.

He said they're subject to regular testing.

"We're constantly monitoring things like temperatures and self assessments, if anyone is a little off they don't come to the arena that day," said Seca. "Touch wood and cross fingers we've been fairly fortunate, no question, based on what we're seeing around the league. It's a situational basis, team to team. Truthfully we kind of assumed that some teams, or all teams, would experience some degree of pause based on COVID."

Seca said everyone within the Sting organization has been vaccinated, although he's still not convinced that will provide full protection against the Omicron variant.

The Owen Sound Attack were also dealing with issues, and their game against Kitchener on Wednesday was postponed.

It's unknown at this time whether the Sting will be able to travel to Owen Sound on Saturday. The Sting are also set to host the Flint Firebirds on Friday night.
