Sarnia Fire launches 12 days of safety tips

Sarnia Fire and Rescue is offering a few safety tips for residents over the Christmas holidays.

Fire Life Safety Educator Mike Otis said they often see an increase in house fires this time of year, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

He said if you have a real Christmas tree, keeping it watered is essential.

"Make sure that you water your fresh Christmas tree daily," said Otis. "A dry Christmas tree is extremely flammable and use proper lighting for your Christmas trees."

Otis said first and foremost, make sure you have working smoke alarms in your home.

"Never use real candles unless you're attending to them, never use extension cords with space heaters and make sure they're one metre or three feet away from anything that's flammable," said Otis. "There are so many different things this time of year with distractions with holidays and sort of forgetting some of the basic safety things."

The 12 Days of Holiday Fire and CO Safety tips are available on Sarnia Fire and Rescue's Facebook page and Twitter account.
