The County of Lambton announced an updated COVID vaccination policy at its Wednesday committee meeting.
Starting October 22, county employees and volunteers will have to provide proof of double vaccination or be subject to weekly rapid antigen testing.
Corporate Services General Manager Stephane Thiffeault said around 1,200 workers are impacted.
"We did a survey of our employees back in July and the results came out in August," said Thiffeault. "The results of that survey indicated that roughly 90 per cent of the respondents were either fully vaccinated or planned to be fully vaccinated. Approximately three per cent indicated they did not plan to be vaccinated, and another seven per cent indicated they preferred not to answer the question."
Thiffeault said the policy also covers workers at the county building in Wyoming as well as local libraries, museums, and Sarnia's Shared Services Centre.
He said it falls in line with a similar directive aimed at long-term care home workers and paramedics.
The new policy does not apply to Lambton County Councillors, however council will consider a similar policy at its next meeting October 6.
Earlier this week, Sarnia City Council adopted a policy stating all councillors must be fully vaccinated by October 31 in order to attend in person meetings.
It also requires all city contractors, consultants and student who provide services to the county to show proof of two COVID vaccine shots.
