Sarnia-Lambton residents, concerned about the environment and impacts of climate change, are invited to a rally on Wednesday evening.
As part of the national day of action, activists are publicly calling for emergency-level climate action as federal party leaders prepare for their televised election debates.
Climate Action Sarnia-Lambton spokesman Allan McKeown said they want a moratorium on fossil fuel expansion, elimination of subsidies to fossil fuel industries, and investment in clean energy technologies.
"In terms of the pandemic recovery, this is an excellent time to start investing in new energy and clean energy jobs," said McKeown. "We need to realize that fossil fuels are going to be a thing of the past eventually."
McKeown said there has to be “just transition” legislation for affected workers in fossil fuel industries.
"We want leaders to come up with solid plans as to how we're going to reduce carbon emissions. Scientists are telling us that the remaining fossil fuels need to stay in the ground, and that we're way over the CF limit for carbon emissions."
Wednesday's rally kicks off at 6 p.m. at the Flag Court in Centennial Park.
Residents will march to the Great Lakes sculpture at the Point Lands, in peaceful protest, and are encouraged to bring signs and follow pandemic protocols.
