Reconstruction work on Queen Street is taking a little longer than anticipated due to "COVID related setbacks".
A section of roadway between Devine Street and Campbell Street (south of Confederation Street) closed on March 29 and was estimated to reopen on June 25. Sarnia Construction Manager Robert Williams said work will likely finish in mid-July.
"Really, a lot of contractors are behind schedule because of COVID related protocols," he said. "All the underground work is now done, so all the pipes and services to the properties is done. The road has been built. We're just waiting on sub-contractors now to complete, basically, the curb and gutter, the sidewalk, and the paving."
Williams said that process is generally done quickly but other factors such as weather and the concrete contractor being delayed are details that need to be considered.
Van Bree Enterprises was the successful bidder for both the Queen Street and Stuart Street projects. Williams said both projects are expected to be complete "roughly on schedule".
He said the minor delay will not have a major impact on the City of Sarnia in terms of cost.
