Nearly 50-year-old high temperature record smashed Thursday

This week's stretch of unusually warm weather resulted in a nearly 50-year-old high temperature record being smashed Thursday.

Environment Canada said the mercury at Sarnia's Chris Hadfield Airport reached 21.4 C, 70 F, at 3 p.m. The previous record for March 11 in Sarnia was 18.3 C, 64 F, set in 1973.

The weather agency said the temperatures this week were more typical of May.

Thunderstorms swept across parts of southern Ontario Thursday in advance of a return to seasonal temperatures this weekend. A high of 3 C, 37 F is forecast for Sunday. The normal high for this time of year in Sarnia is 5 C, 41 F.

Spring officially arrives Saturday, March 20 at 5:37 a.m.
