New online teaching resource for patients at Bluewater Health

Bluewater Health has a new online patient teaching resource for those undergoing joint replacement surgeries.

The videos help prepare patients for surgery and recovery.

Chief of Communications and Public Affairs Julia Oosterman said the move away from the classroom setting to online learning started before the pandemic.

"To be fair part of it was driven by COVID and our desire to keep as many people out of the hospital as possible," said Oosterman. "When you're in the classroom setting and you're trying to learn maybe a lot of information, it may be a little bit intimidating and you only have one chance to listen to it and talk to the instructor. In a video environment, not only can you sit with maybe your son or daughter, you can replay it, you can learn at your own pace and your own speed."

Oosterman said a cross-section of healthcare professionals including nurses, surgeons and physiotherapists collaborated on the online resource tool.

She said the move to online resources and services where possible will likely continue to grow at Bluewater Health, in part because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
