1,114 pounds of pot seized at Blue Water Bridge

Trying to pass off over a half-ton of marijuana as office furniture didn't go as planned for an Ontario driver who attempted to smuggle the drugs across the Blue Water Bridge.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) said border officers stopped a commercial truck with Ontario plates on Monday as it attempted to cross into Port Huron.

The truck's manifest claimed that it was transporting office furniture, however, upon searching the vehicle, border guards uncovered over 1,114 pounds marijuana in vacuum-sealed packages. The packages had been concealed in cardboard boxes and loaded onto wooden pallets within the truck.

The U.S. border patrol has not indicated if any charges have been laid in connection with the incident.

"The [U.S. Customs and Border Patrol] Detroit Field Office, which covers all ports of entry throughout Michigan, has seen a significant increase in narcotics seized since essential travel restrictions were enacted due to the COVID-19 pandemic," border officials said in a news release. "Since March, CBP Field Operations has seized over 4,400 pounds of marijuana at ports of entry across the state."
