Shell Canada reports another hydrocarbon sheen on Talfourd Creek

For the second time in a month, Shell Canada is reporting the discovery of a sheen on Talfourd Creek near its Corunna refinery.

In a statement to BlackburnNews.com, company spokesperson Kristen Schmidt said a sheen was noticed upstream of its booms at around 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

The company issued a Chemical Valley Emergency Coordinating Organization (CVECO) information notice just before 1 p.m., according to the Aamjiwnaang Notification System.

"It is believed to be a hydrocarbon and is being managed using booms and vacuum trucks," said Schmidt. "There is no potential for the substance to reach the St. Clair river. The situation is being closely monitored and investigations into the cause are ongoing. At this time, no action is required from the community as a result of this occurrence. All safety precautions and standard regulatory protocols are being followed."

The company also reported a sheen on the creek on the night of July 14.

A CVECO Code 10 was issued by Shell at around 9 p.m.

The company reported the sheen was contained and vacuum trucks were deployed to remove it from the water.
