Sarnia's mayor is hoping the third time's the charm as he continues to press Lambton County to adopt a mandatory mask bylaw.
Mike Bradley said Tuesday his only remaining option under the rules of order is to bring a notice of reconsideration to county council's next regular meeting September 2.
Bradley's motion for a county-wide bylaw was rejected 25-12 in a weighted vote on July 8. On July 30, the Sarnia mayor polled his county colleagues to gauge support to hold a special meeting to reconsider the decision but only the mayor of Petrolia responded in favour.
Monday night, the Town of Petrolia joined the city as the second lower tier municipality in the Lambton federation to legislate the wearing of masks as a pandemic precaution. The vote was 6-1 in favour but a survey of nearly half the town's residents was narrowly in favour, 51 to 49 per cent.
Petrolia Mayor Brad Loosely would like to see a uniform bylaw across Lambton.
"This was a difficult decision for a local council to step in and do, and as mayor I'm actually sorry our local council had to deal with this at a local level," said Loosely. "I still believe the province or the county should be dealing with this, or reconsider, so all the communities would be the same."
Also Monday, Chatham-Kent approved a mandatory mask bylaw, leaving Lambton County as the only region in the province without one.
